Combat Style

A character’s combat style indicates how they interact with the world both in and out of combat. Some styles are based on traditional archetypes, such as tank, damage, and healer while other styles can be adapted through roleplay or created at character submission.

Combat techniques are the actual actions or spells your character would typically perform during or out of combat. The infographic to the right shows how abilities and spells are affected by style and effect.

Type of abilities are either Martial (weapon) or Magical (element).

Style is either aggressive, defensive, or utility

Effects are over time, single-use, or multi target.

Martial Techniques

Martial techniques are abilities that do not require magic to use. Some examples of weapon style techniques include physical bleeding, applied poison, as well as stunned or knock-down effects. Players would use the PAtk skill to strike with a physical weapon, regardless of effect. A physical ranged weapon, such as a bow or gun, would use RAtk. A weapon can also strike multiple foes if a character has learned how to multi-target. Characters can also perform healing with medkits or first-aid techniques for the same equivalent of magical healing.

For martial techniques it is helpful to write out combat knowledge on your character sheet. If you articulate your character’s martial techniques ahead of time it will be easier to roleplay them during combat and maintain a consistent style.

Magical Techniques

Magical techniques require magic to cast. Some examples of magical techniques include element casting, such as fire or water, illusions, and summoning. Magical weapons can have additional effects that are caused by enchantments imbued in them by their wielder. Players would use the Matk skill to strike with a magical weapon or technique, regardless of effect. A magical ranged weapon, such as a firebolt style spell or manatek rifle, would use RAtk. Magic can also strike multiple foes if a character has learned how to multi-target. Characters can also perform healing with healing spells or potions.

For magical techniques it is helpful to write out a spell bank on your character sheet. If you articulate your character’s abilities ahead of time it will be easier to roleplay them during combat and maintain a consistent style.
